Family Traditions Are Fantastic

family traditions - avocado festival

Last weekend, the Doctor and the Dad packed up the car, buckled up the kids and headed up the coast for our absolute, no-doubt-about-it favorite event of the year: The California Avocado Festival.

For three days, our family consumed as much of the green stuff as possible, including fried avocado wedges, avocado ice cream, avocado whoopie pies, avocado beer (Mom and Dad only, of course), and chips with loads of delicious dip scooped straight out of the World’s Largest Vat of Guacamole.

Happy Mammary-al Day: One dad’s attempt to keep his baby breastfeeding – when mom went out of town for the weekend

dad attempts breastfeeding

Our long holiday weekend felt even longer than usual. That’s because The Doctor went out of town for a fun-filled girls’ weekend in Nashville, leaving The Dad and all three kids to fend for themselves.

Normally, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Andy is a pretty modern, participating dad, and we know how important it is for dads to be involved in raising the kids and all that.

But there were two things that made mom being away this particular weekend a little more challenging:

Her boobs.

Remembering Our Babymoon this Saint Patrick’s Day

Today we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day like this:

Babies!
Babies!

and it reminded us of when we used to celebrate it like this:

Beers!

It also reminded us of the time we went to Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day for our big “babymoon” vacation right before we started having kids. Here are some of the shenanigans we got ourselves into back then:

Does renting a wheelchair at Disneyland just because I’m pregnant make me a wuss?

decisionsdecisions

Today’s Ask the Doctor and the Dad question comes from the Doctor herself! It’s a question she asked herself repeatedly in the days leading up to our big family trip to Disneyland last week, and it went a little something like this:

Should I rent a wheelchair at Disneyland because I’m eight months pregnant? Or should I just try to tough it out? Maybe I should tough it out and walk. After all, I’m a badass chick, so I should be able to do this! But being super pregnant also makes me get tired just walking across the living room right now, plus my butt hurts constantly. So maybe I should get a wheelchair? I don’t know. Hmmm. What do you think I should do?

It’s family vacation time!

The Doctor and the Dad (and the Daughter and the Son) are on vacation this week. And let us tell you, it is awesome!

If you and your brood haven’t taken a big, relaxing break together lately, you really owe it to yourselves to schedule one. Research shows that family vacations contribute positively to family bonding, communication and solidarity. Plus, they’re a ton of fun, too!

…Unless, of course, they end up being as disappointing…

…disastrous…

…or decidedly awkward as these.

Happy family vacationing everybody!
