If you happen to be one of those parents who is also a totally talented, movie-making special effects whiz, you can create some truly extraordinary experiences for your child.
Here’s what we’re talking about, courtesy of DreamWorks animator Daniel Hashimoto and his three-year-old son James:
As amazingly fun as those “Action Movie Kid” videos are, you’ll be happy to know that you can give your little super hero some equally mind-blowing memories – even if you have no CGI skills whatsoever.
In fact, the only thing you need to do to have memorable adventures with your child is pretend. Pretend that the living room rug is actually a pit full of ravenous crocodiles. Pretend that your stroller is an intergalactic sleeping pod. Pretend that Grandma and Grandpa are secretly space aliens who took over the real Grandma and Grandpa’s bodies years ago, and that they pull off their fake human masks to reveal their slimy, scaly antennae-covered alien faces every night when they go to bed.
It’s true. You’ve seen it happen.
When you encourage your kids to participate in imaginative pretend play experiences like these, it teaches them to build their own special effects – right in their minds! As a result, they’ll tend to develop stronger skills in creativity, imagination, and story building. Plus you’ll get to enjoy some super-fun parent-child bonding time, too.
And unlike playing with a real death-ray laser gun, it’s a completely victimless activity.
(Unless you count Grandma and Grandpa. Sorry the kids are so terrified of you these days, guys. We have no idea what happened!)

I’m glad I’m not the only one telling my child that about Grandma & Grandpa.
(They had it coming.)
